It was a real pleasure to attend the Aphra Behn Society of Canterbury’s wine tasting earlier in October – one of many events planned for 2023/24 raising the profile of the pioneering Aphra and Canterbury as her birthplace. Expert Clive Barlow guided us through a selection of wonderful Kent wines, perfectly matched with Behn readings by the society’s Hilary Scott and Patricia Hodges. The audience was a mixture of Behn enthusiasts and wine lovers.
80% of those who completed the feedback had not attended an Aphra related event before and the vast majority went away more knowledgeable about Behn’s life and work. Feedback comments highlighted Behn as a pioneer, source of local pride and her value to Canterbury in terms of promoting positive diversity and potential to encourage visitors to the city.
It was an incredible informative and convivial afternoon. I can particularly recommend the local Pinot Gris. Chin chin!
